About Problem Gambling

What is Problem Gambling?

Problem gambling (also called gambling disorder or "gambling addiction") is characterized by difficulty controlling gambling impulses, continuing to gamble despite negative consequences, and experiencing distress when unable to gamble.

Unlike casual gambling, problem gambling takes over your life. It can lead to devastating financial losses, damaged relationships, mental health issues, and even illegal behavior to fund gambling.

The good news: gambling addiction is treatable. Like other addictions, it requires support, commitment, and often professional help—but recovery is absolutely possible.

Warning Signs

  • Gambling with increasing amounts of money
  • Chasing losses—gambling to win back what you lost
  • Lying about gambling habits to family and friends
  • Borrows money or sells belongings to gamble
  • Neglecting work, family, or other responsibilities
